In today’s Information Age, we are accumulating more and more data every day — almost more data than we know what to do with and more data than we have storage for. In this data abundance paradigm, memory interfaces have become a key area of focus for research and development engineers. Whether it is for cloud storage, deep neural network processing, or mobile handset storage, a memory interface is critical for ensuring proper data storage and retrieval.
There are many different memory interfaces, from DDR to SerDes based, but they all share the common theme of implementing quite a large bandwidth and a large number of transmission channels. This has created huge demand for short-reach chip-to-chip interfaces with individual channels running at 28 Gbps or 56 Gbps. While these links often build on existing protocols, they are creating increasingly unique challenges for test and measurement. For example, they often require extremely short reaches and some proprietary protocol features.

400G and PAM4
As a result of the proliferation of cloud computing in the twenty-first century, end users are demanding faster and higher performing cloud computing infrastructure. In turn, this demand for faster data transmission is fueling a data center migration to 400G technology. The focus of 400G today is transitioning the modulation scheme of high-speed Ethernet standards to be based on PAM4 instead of NRZ.
This allows for transmitting double the data bits within the same time interval, thus reducing the strain on the already congested interconnection media.
